Leadership & Service
Preparing young people to make a positive impact on the world is something taken very seriously at St. Joseph Elementary School. Accordingly, every effort is made to participate in events and interact with the community outside our doors in order to foster a sense of giving, responsibility and civic pride. Our good intentions are only amplified by practicing good works.
- Dedicated School Council and Parent Support Group
- Two teachers went on the Mexico Mission trip with the high school and helped build a room for a small Catholic school in Matachi. We continue the legacy by ongoing fundraising to assist the school.
- Annual participation in the Terry Fox Run
- Annual participation in Jump Rope for Heart
- Annual participation in Operation Christmas Child
- Regular Christmas Caroling at Seniors’ Residences
- Our Grade Sevens take the opportunity to serve lunch and help out at the Kelowna Gospel Mission
- Our annual yearbook is published with help of student photographers
- Our Junior St. Vincent de Paul organizes visits to Seniors’ Residence and collects food and toiletries for the needy
- A chosen group of Grade Five students is committed to reverently taking down the prayer table after each weekly assembly.
- Students in Grades Four to Seven have an assigned ‘buddy’ in a younger grade – ensuring that by spending time together throughout the year and working on special projects, there will be harmony within the school, mentorship amongst the students and often, just being friends.
- Student Leadership Team members have been responsible in the past for requesting playground equipment for the senior playground, and for working with administration to encourage menu changes in our lunch program.
- Senior students have initiated outreach activities such as fundraising for our local hospital children’s ward.
These are only some of the ways we work to be ‘out there’ and behind the scenes of our community, hopefully teaching our students and that by giving of their God-given gifts and talents they are improving both the world and themselves.
